M. Sc. (PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY)

Introduction : It is a scientific discipline at the intersection of Chemistry and Pharmacy involved with designing and developing pharmaceutical drugs. It involves identification, synthesis and development of new chemical entities suitable for therapeutic use. It also includes the study of existing drugs (synthetic/ semi-synthetic/ natural), their biological properties, and their quantitative structure-activity relationships.

To live a worthy life is primary concern of all living beings. And for this a sound health is a major issue. For enjoying a good health often we have to get rid of the diseases and ailments. Prior to advent of 20th Century we had little systematic or scientific knowledge about the beneficial materials for health (also called drugs), which could cure us from the diseases or ailments. Most approaches were based on hit and trial methods. It was only since 1904 when Paul Ehlrich gave us a scientific theory of structure and drug action, we entered into the age of renaissance in the field of pharmacologically active compounds with a definite correlation of drug behavior with their structure it is very thrilling to note that just by changing the molecular structure, drug behavior and hence the pharmacological activity is also altered. Ideal drug is an ideal key to unlock the locking situations of the ailment or the diseases. And to find it is and intellectual as well interesting assignment to a pharmaceutical chemist. Needless to say, once the key is found, the fortune brings all fancies for the discoverer. Further it is a real service to the mankind.

Realizing the importance of this field our IET Biotechnology Institute - which is well know for its foresight and vision for career planning of the students- has started systematically organized studies in this applied field of immense significance and bright future. It is our pleasure as well as pride to declare that University of Rajasthan has been kind enough to affiliate this course of study in our Institute at P. G. Level.

JOB PROSPECTS AND NATURE OF WORK

The range of job opportunities for Pharmaceutical Chemists, one as diverse as pathogens and ailments. Further production of pharmaceuticals requires and additional expertise depending on the specific or selective utility of the product, rigorous control over the conditions of their production and the reactors / processors required. Techniques exploited by pharmaceutical chemistry are now the preferred techniques in pharmacognosy, pharmacology, Pharmaceutical technology, pharma-biotechnology, toxicology, environmental sciences, biochemistry, clinical chemistry, molecular biology, bio-physical and bio-inorganic chemistry. Pharmaceutical chemists are integral part of the work on the drug designing, development and cure of the diseases. Their knowledge about the targeted disease – its cause, treatments used in the past and mechanisms of the drug Pharmaceutical Chemists design new drugs which thwarts the action of the attacking reagent, and then after the molecule to maximize its therapeutic effects and minimize possible side effects. They are also involved in the development and the use of the methods for analysis of drugs / metabolites/ bio-molecules present in bodily tissues or fluids. Pharmaceutical chemists are also required in Pharmaceutical Industries, food & beverages industries, agriculture based industries and environmental protection agencies.
